Nick Riddiford(1948) holds an Bachelor of Education, Second Class First Division Honours (B.Ed. Hons.) in French and Education from the University of Bristol (1972).He holds also a Degree of Master of Philosophy (M. Phil.) in Life Sciences of De Montfort University (1991). His Master's thesis at Montfort was about Bird migration strategies and population fluctuations in western Europe. Nick Riddiford has been active in the field of ecological monitoring, in particular ornitology, for more than 30 years on a broad range of environmental topics all over the world. Currently he is principal Investigator of Project S'Albufera (TAIB), coordinator of the local biodiversity action plan of Fair Isle and projectleader of projects within the programmes of Medwetcoast (training), Northern Periphery Programm and the Natural Trust for Scotland.

His main interests:

  • Cummunity participation in environmental conservation through sustainable resource management.
  • Ecology and farming: particularly the impact of grazing on vegetation and habitats, and the benefits of traditional (organic) farming for the environment.
  • Ecological adaptations and change.
  • Reedbed and wetland ecology.
  • Ecology of coastal dune systems.
  • The marine environment and its conservation through planned, sustainable management. n Bird migration strategies, population fluctuations and associated displacements/range expansions.
  • Seabird feeding and breeding ecology.
